The Texas Iris Society is an affiliate of the American Iris Society. The group has fourteen member societies in Region 17.

The society has been around for a few years and has a very active website. The AIS is an international organization for the study and preservation of irises. The Texas chapter is headquartered in Austin. The society hosts a rhizome sale in Mesilla Valley Mall in September. It is free to attend. You can also become a member of the Texas Iris Society and enjoy a membership in the organization.

The society also holds a convention every two years. The annual convention takes place in Austin, Texas. This year’s convention was the 50th anniversary of the state. AIS President, Walter Moores, is the president of the organization. He is also the chairman of the convention’s section committee. He was elected by the Section Advisory Board, and the original nominees are considered elected. In addition to the state competition, ten national and international irises were presented at the convention, including the TENNESSEE BICENTENNIAL BERGER BICENTENNIAL, which won the AIS President’s Cup, Best Educational Exhibit, and AIS Membership Contest Plaque.

Generally, iris plants bloom during the spring or early summer, but reblooming irises are also available. Plants should receive full sunlight, though the iris will not flower in a half-day of sunshine. The soil should be neutral to slightly acidic, but not too wet. Moreover, the iris plant should have good drainage. It should also receive water during the summer months. If you are growing iris in the garden, you can also purchase bare rhizomes for transplanting.
